Dear Friends,

My Uncle Floyd (my Mom’s brother) worked as a commercial concept artist for R. G. LeTourneau in Ft. Worth, Texas many years ago.  Mr. LeTourneau was a committed Christian who built some of the world’s largest earth moving equipment at that time.  He was an incredibly generous man and was quoted as saying, “Not how much of my money I give to God, but how much of His money I keep for myself.”

He gave what some call the “reverse tithe” meaning he gave away 90% of his income and lived on 10%.  The more he gave away the wealthier he became.  When asked by people how he could give away so much and still continue to accumulate wealth he responded, “I shovel to God and He shovels it back, and God has a bigger shovel!”

Of all people on earth, Christians should be extravagantly generous people.  We know that God owns everything.  We know that everything we have is a gift from God.  We know that God promises to care and provide for us.  So why would any Christian ever be stingy?

When Shawn and Sarah waited tables in college, they said that the unsaved servers would fight not to have to serve the Christians because they knew they would be very demanding and would leave very small tips.  This is a terrible witness for Christians.  We should be the most generous of all people. Servers should fight to have the opportunity of waiting on us because we have a caring and generous reputation.

HERE ARE 6 BIBLICAL PRINCIPLES FOR GENEROUS GIVING:

  1. GIVE FIRST

Proverbs 3:9 (ESV) Honor the Lord with your wealth and with the firstfruits of all your produce

  1. GIVE GENEROUSLY

Isaiah 32:8 (NLT) But generous people plan to do what is generous, and they stand firm in their generosity.

  1. GIVE SACRIFICIALLY

2 Corinthians 8:2b–3a (NLT) …they are very poor. But they are also filled with abundant joy, which has overflowed in rich generosity. 3 For I can testify that they gave not only what they could afford, but far more.

  1. GIVE PROPORTIONALLY (PERCENTAGE GIVING)

2 Corinthians 8:11 (NLT) Give in proportion to what you have.

  1. GIVE IN RESPONSE TO NEEDS

1 John 3:17 (NLT) If someone has enough money to live well and sees a brother or sister in need but shows no compassion—how can God’s love be in that person?

  1. GIVE THROUGH YOUR LOCAL CONGREGATION

Galatians 6:6 (NLT) Those who are taught the word of God should provide for their teachers, sharing all good things with them.

What if we as Christians became so generous that lost people were drawn to the Lord we serve?

Onward in generosity,

Pastor Gary
